AAUW Community Action Grants

AAUW Daytona Beach has worked with other community organizations to develop projects which have been funded by AAUW Educational Foundation.

1996 – A grant was awarded to assist with the archiving of the Mary McLeod Bethune Home Museum.

1997 – A grant of $4950 was used to advertise the Domestic Abuse Crisis Center Help-line on city buses.

Rose Bay Environmental Project

2013 – The branch worked with the Museum of Arts and Sciences to secure a grant for the Archeology Lab project at Burns School in Oak Hill.

In addition to AAUW Educational Foundation funded Community Action Grants, AAUW Daytona Beach has participated in a wide variety of other community projects, Including

Event Description:

From the research team who brought you Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics comes a deeper dive into engineering and computing, fields that offer 80 percent of STEM jobs but still boast dismal numbers of women students and workers.

A panel of experts from the industry and academia, moderated by leading gender-in-science researcher Londa Schiebinger, will discuss the report’s findings and what they mean for anyone who cares about tapping the innovative solutions that half our population offers.

  • Tech Trek will provide girls from across the state an opportunity to be inspired by the opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  The camp is being held at Eckerd College in July.
  • Book Club selections for the Summer:

June 9:

Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. This novel was named the best book of the year by The Washington Post and USA Today. This selection deals with butterflies and climate change.

July 14:

Defending Jacob by William Landay. This book is about a courtroom drama that deals with the murder of a high school boy.

August 11:

The Daughters of Mars by Thomas Keneally. In 1915 two spirited Australian sisters join the war effort as nurses, escaping the confines of their father’s farm and carrying a guilty secret with them.

AAUW Book Group

The book group meets the second Monday of the Month at 10:30 am at the City Island Library.
