  The Tidings

Daytona Beach (FL) Branch                                      September 2013

 September Meeting: September 21

AAUW Florida Tech Trek

11 a.m.

Palmetto Club, 1000 Beach St., Daytona Beach

Bring a Guest!

Speaker: Jennifer McDaniel, 2013 AAUW Florida Tech Trek Director

Find out more about AAUW Florida’s new Tech Trek program. Tech Trek started in 1998 with one site in California and in 15 years grew to 10 camps on eight college campuses across the country. AAUW expanded the camps to five new campus locations in the summer of 2013 through partnerships with branch, state and member leaders.

Attending camp on a college or university campus helps girls — especially those whose parents may not have gone to college — to see themselves seeking higher education. The university campus experience gives girls a chance to think about the kinds of opportunities a college education can afford them. Camp field trips encourage maximum interaction and instruction in environments where STEM professionals work.

Girls are immersed in a world in which they are empowered by their capabilities and encouraged to think about themselves not just as young women but also as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists.

The 2014 Florida Tech Trek will be held July 13-19 at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.

AAUW Literature Club

September 9 at 10:30 a.m.

City Island Library, Daytona Beach

We will read “Let’s Take a Long Way Home” by Gail Caldwell.

Pat Race will facilitate.

They met over their dogs. Gail Caldwell and Caroline Knapp (author of Drinking: A Love Story) became best friends, talking about everything from their love of books and their shared history of a struggle with alcohol to their relationships with men. Walking the woods of New England and rowing on the Charles River, these two private, self-reliant women created an attachment more profound than either of them could ever have foreseen. Then, several years into this remarkable connection, Knapp was diagnosed with cancer. With her signature exquisite prose, Caldwell mines the deepest levels of devotion, and courage in this gorgeous memoir about treasuring a best friend, and coming of age in midlife. Let’s Take the Long Way Home is a celebration of the profound transformations that come from intimate connection—and it affirms, once again, why Gail Caldwell is recognized as one of our bravest and most honest literary voices.

We will also be discussing the book selections for the upcoming year. Everyone is welcome.

 President’s Comments

I want to welcome you back to an exciting year for AAUW Daytona. Our mission states: AAUW advances equity for women through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Our programs throughout the year will focus on the AAUW mission and on our involvement in our community.

Our September meeting will introduce you to Jennifer McDaniel, the Director for AAUW Tech Trek 2013. Tech Trek is a week-long science and math summer camp designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in young women who are entering the eighth grade. Be sure to invite potential members to join us to learn more about this project.

Our branch is partnering with the Museum of Arts and Science on the Archeology Lab project, which is partially funded through and AAUW Community Action Grant. There are many volunteer opportunities for our members, ranging from historical research to help on the dig and in the classroom. There will be more information at our meeting and on our new website www. daytona-fl.aauw.net. Please consider how you can help to make this project a success.

Our Literature Club and Daytrippers groups are already meeting. Remember you are welcome to join the interest groups and you are encouraged to help us start other groups, which would be of interest to members.

Your board members have been working hard throughout the summer to plan an interesting year of programs and projects. But, for the branch to be successful, your participation is crucial. There are so many ways you can help. I encourage you to share your ideas, volunteer to help with the fundraisers and other projects, invite friends to join the branch. With everyone’s help we can grow our branch, focus on our mission and make a real difference for our community.

Thank you to all of you who have already offered your time and talents to benefit AAUW. A special Thank You to Jeanne Jeffs who has your Member Directory ready to pick up at the meeting. The Directory is a big job and we are most fortunate to have someone who accomplishes it in such a timely manner!

I am looking forward to working with you and getting to know you better. Because equity is still an issue.
